How to Set Up Elakai Hook & Ring

The Setup

Follow the diagram and instructions below to mount and set up your Hook & Ring game.

Elakai Hook and Ring Setup Diagram

  1. Install the Target Hook
    • Screw the Target Hook by hand into the center hole on the Target Board.
    • Make sure the end of the Target Hook does not protrude from the back of the board so it doesn’t damage your wall.
    • Ensure the Target Hook is in an upright position as shown in the diagram.
  2. Mount the Target Board
    • Mount the Target Board on a wall, approximately 4–5 feet high.
    • Use the included adhesive tape and/or screws to secure it firmly.
  3. Install the Overhead Eye Hook
    • Screw the Eye Hook into the ceiling in line with the Target Board.
    • Position it approximately 4–5 feet away from the wall the Target Board is mounted on.
  4. Attach the Ring
    • Tie one end of the string to the Ring.
    • Place the Ring onto the Target Hook.
  5. Set String Length & Slack
    • With help, hold the Ring in a horizontal position on the Target Hook.
    • Tie the open end of the string to the Eye Hook.
    • There should be a slight amount of slack in the string to allow the Ring to hook onto the Target Hook when tossed.
    • Adjust the slack as needed to achieve the best playability.

Note: This Hook & Ring set can also be mounted on trees, decks, or similar structures, as long as there is a suitable place for both the Target Board and the Eye Hook. Simple fixtures made from 2x4 lumber can be used to support both pieces.

How to Play Hook & Ring

Best of Ten

  1. Compete against yourself or an opponent to see how many ringers (successful hooks) you can score out of 10 tosses.
  2. The player with the most ringers after 10 tosses wins.

Horse

  1. Decide Turn Order
    • All players agree on the order of play.
  2. First Shot
    • The first player (Player 1) attempts any style of shot at the ring from a location of their choice.
  3. Copy the Shot
    • If Player 1 makes the shot, Player 2 must attempt the same shot:
      • From the same place, and
      • Using the same style of toss.
    • If Player 2 makes the shot, then Player 3 must attempt it, and so on, continuing in order until it returns to Player 1.
  4. New Leader
    • If Player 1 misses their original shot, then Player 2 becomes the new leader and chooses the next shot.
  5. Spelling HORSE
    • Each time a player misses a shot that another player has successfully made, that player receives a letter:
    • First miss = H, then O, R, S, and finally E.
    • When a player has spelled HORSE, they are out of the game.
  6. Winning the Game
    • The last remaining player who has not spelled HORSE is the winner.
