How to Set Up Elakai Washer Toss

The Setup

  1. Remove the washer targets and washers from the carry bag.
  2. Find a flat, open area and place the two targets 15–21 feet apart.
  3. Clear away any objects between or around the targets to ensure an unobstructed tossing path.
  4. Separate the 8 washers by color (4 red and 4 blue). One team uses red; the other uses blue.
  5. Ensure the Game-Over Stake is securely tightened in the center of each target.
  6. You are now ready to play Elakai Washer Toss!

The Playfield

Washer Toss Playfield Diagram

The Washers

  • The game uses 8 washers: 4 red and 4 blue.
  • Washers may be plastic-coated steel or uncoated steel.
  • Weights may vary.
  • Each washer must have at least a 1-inch center hole when used with the Game-Over Stake.

Washer Toss Rules

The Original Game-Over Stake

If a player lands a washer ringed around the center stake at any point, the game ends immediately. No rebuttals. No additional throws. Instant win.

Note: The foul line is defined as stepping in front of the target next to your pitching box (see playfield diagram).

Singles Play (Individuals)

  • Player 1 competes against Player 2.
  • Players stand side-by-side at one target.
  • Coin toss determines who throws first.
  • Players alternate tosses until all 4 washers per player have been thrown.
  • Players walk to the opposite target, score the round, and throw back to the first target.
  • Scoring uses cancellation scoring (see below).

Doubles Play (Teams)

  • Two teams of two players.
  • Partners stand across from each other, as shown in the playfield diagram.
  • The coin toss determines which team throws first.
  • Player 1 on Team 1 tosses first, followed by Player 1 on Team 2.
  • Players alternate until both players have tossed all 4 washers.
  • Partners at the scoring end tally the round and collect washers.
  • The second players then throw back toward the original target.
  • Scoring uses cancellation scoring.

Scoring

Cancellation Scoring

Both teams tally their points at the end of the round. The difference between those point totals is awarded to the higher scoring team.

The first team to reach 21 points — or to ring the Game-Over Stake — wins the game.

Point Values

  • A washer ringed around the Game-Over Stake = Instant Win
  • A washer inside the center square = 3 points
  • A washer inside the target box (but outside the center square) = 1 point
  • A washer outside the target box = 0 points
  • A washer that bounces into the target box = 0 points (remove before play continues)

Optional Scoring Rules

  • Mercy Rule: If a team reaches 11 points before the opponent scores, the game ends immediately.
  • Exactly 21: If a team exceeds 21 points, their score resets to 15. A team must reach exactly 21 to win.
  • Traditional Play: Remove the Game-Over Stake to play a classic race-to-21 version of the game.
