The Rules

The objective of Kubb is to knock down all of your opponent’s Knights using the throwing dowels. Once all Knights are down, a team must knock down the King to win.

If a team knocks down the King before all Knights are down, that team immediately loses.

Starting the Game

  1. Each team selects one player to toss a throwing dowel toward the King.
  2. The dowel closest to the King without touching it determines which team goes first.
  3. The winning team becomes Team A.

Gameplay

  1. Team A tosses the throwing dowels (one at a time) to knock down Team B’s baseline Knights.
  2. After all dowels have been thrown, Team B:
    • Collects any toppled Knights.
    • Tosses them underhand onto Team A’s half of the field.
    • Team A stands the Knights where they land—these become Field Knights, placed facing Team B.
    • Field Knights act as defensive blockers for Team A.
  3. If a Knight fails to land inbounds after two tries:
    • The opposing team may place that Knight anywhere on their half.
    • These baseline Knights become Field Knights.
  4. Strategy Options when placing Field Knights:
    1. Place them at least one block length away from the King.
    2. Place them just in front of the baseline Knights.
  5. Team B now throws the dowels:
    • They must knock down the Field Knights first.
    • Only once the Field Knights are down may they target the Baseline Knights.
  6. At the end of Team B’s turn:
    • Team A tosses all toppled Field Knights (and any Baseline Knights knocked down) onto Team B’s half.
    • Team B stands them up where they land.

Winning the Game

The first team to:

  1. Knock down all of the opposing team’s Knights, and
  2. Knock over the King wins the game.
