Bocce may be played with 2, 4, or 8 players.
2 players - Players divide the balls by color (4 balls per player).
4 players - Players divide the balls by color and stripes (2 balls per player).
8 players - Teams of two divide the balls by color and stripes (1 ball per player; 2 balls per team)
Official bocce courts are 13' x 90', but any spacious area can be adapted for recreational games.
Bocce is best enjoyed using a flat surface with either grass, sand, or a soft dirt surface. To avoid damaging your bocce balls, do not play bocce on a hard surface.
4 red bocce balls
4 blue bocce balls
1 pallino (or jack)
The winner of the coin toss has the option to either toss the palino first or select their preferred color of bocce ball.
Toss the pallino either beyond half-court or a reasonable distance away from the starting point.
Teams take alternating turns rolling their balls towards the pallino. Try to land your ball closest to the pallino. You may hit the pallino to move the position, or hit the other team's balls to knock the away from the pallino.
Each time a team gets their bocce ball closer than the opposing team's closest ball, they step aside and allow their other team to throw. Play stops after all balls have been tossed.
The team with their ball closest to the pallino scores. They get 1 point for each ball that is closer to the pallino than the opposing team's closest bocce ball. After score is taken, play resumes with the scoring team tossing the pallino to begin the next round.
The first team to reach 21 points wins the game.
